“There is something more to the Christian life than just the altar of burnt offering.”

TEXT:

Chapter 8, Page 75 –

And when they came to this altar of burnt offering and made their sacrifice, when they said their penitential prayers while pressing their hand upon the animal’s head and cut the throat of the animal with their own hand and watched the blood run out until the animal died – in their place – for their sin, they left forgiven. They went back out through those curtained gates at the entrance to the courtyard as a sinner who was forgiven, in other words (the Greek word kai – did you remember?), a saint. And greatly beloved of God.

This is where most people today who profess to be Christians – stop. This is where the people of Romans 3:19-26 stop – where God displays publicly the redemption that is in Jesus Christ, that He might be just and, at the same time, be the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. This is where the people of 2 Corinthians 5:21 stop – where Jesus was made to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. This is where the story of the Philippian jailer stopped. Look at Acts 16:30-31. “And after he brought them out, he said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.’” So many people today want to stop here at the altar of burnt offering.
